How to Use Z39.50 Servers
Configure these servers in Koha to import cataloging records
1. In Koha Administration
Go to Administration → Z39.50/SRU servers to add new servers using the connection details provided.
2. Test Connection
Always test the server connection before saving to ensure it's working properly with your Koha instance.
3. Configure Databases
Some servers offer multiple databases. Choose the ones most relevant to your collection.
4. Import Records
Use the cataloging module to search and import records from configured Z39.50 servers. For bulk imports or records that need quality fixes, run downloaded records through MARCReady before loading into Koha.
Working with retrieved records
Z39.50 gets you the record. The quality varies.
Clean records after copy cataloguing
Even records retrieved from authoritative servers often have indicator errors, ISBN-10 values that need converting to ISBN-13, missing RDA fields (336/337/338), or empty subfields that cause Koha import warnings. MARCReady corrects these automatically.
Skip Z39.50 entirely for bulk imports
If you have a spreadsheet or vendor file with ISBNs, MARCReady's Advanced Repair feature queries the Library of Congress catalogue by ISBN and retrieves the authoritative MARC record — no Z39.50 client or manual copy cataloguing needed. Useful for batch processing vendor records or migration data.
